Invest Like Buffett
“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
– Isaac Newton
Sean stood in the lobby and looked at his watch anxiously. “10:50am. Ten more minutes.” He was so excited that he could hardly breathe. In a moment’s time, he was about to meet the mentor who would change his life....
This person was Mary Buffett, the ex-daughter-in-law of Warren Buffett. She had personally interacted with Warren as a family member for 12 years and learned of his thoughts and how he acted in the stock market. Whilst many in Wall Street would step into the stock market with a short-term speculative mindset, Warren was able to remain logical. With intelligence and fundamental methodology, he was able to gain an advantage and profit billions.
Being in close proximity to the oracle, Mary began to absorb the techniques and philosophy. In 1997, she consolidated her learning and co-authored her first book, “The Buffettology” with David Clark. This was first of the many books she eventually published. Her books not only became one of the best sellers, but were also translated into 17 different languages and distributed all over the world.
In the meantime, back in Singapore, Sean had just picked up the “The New Buffettology” after losing a huge sum of money in the stock market. He was desperate to turn things around and the contents of the book enlightened him. He utilized what he had learned and managed to achieve consistent results. This drove him to research further on how he could invest like a Buffett.
Eventually, he decided to meet Mary personally. After months of searching and connecting, he eventually managed to find someone who could arrange for a 1-hour meet up in Los Angeles.
“Are you Sean?” a clear crisped voice asked.
“M…Mary?” Sean turned around and saw a lady in shades. It was Mary Buffett.
“Shall we have some tea at the restaurant?” Mary asked with a smile.
After five minutes of self-introduction, investment ideas started to flow. Mary and Sean were completing each other’s sentences and spoke as if they had known each other for a long time. This 1-hour meeting had stretched from late morning till dinner. Eventually, they exchanged numbers, and this discussion would continue for the next decade to come.
Mary has kindly become a mentor and an adviser to Sean. With her help and support, Sean has now become an authority in the investment field.
Now, pause for a moment and picture these scenarios:
What if Mary never wrote the book and kept the secrets in her mind?
What if Sean never picked up “The New Buffettology.”?
What if the meeting in Los Angeles never took place?
In the same light, what if the book that you are holding now can kick-start your journey in becoming a confident and profitable investor? It is for this very purpose that Mary and Sean decided to co-author this book together.
In this book, you will learn how to create wealth from the knowledge of Mary and Sean. As you read, you will find yourself having conversations with Mary or Sean. At times, both of them will share their experiences. So, do not be surprised if you see “I” and “we” being used interchangeably. Once you are ready, turn to the next page and start a new beginning.
